Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Group

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with extensive world-building, a wide array of heroes, and a thrilling plot showcasing celestial beings, demons, and sinister influences growing in influence within the urban setting.

Note: Key plot points for the third episode of the new season follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled

The latest chapter ended with a dramatic pause and introduced the premier party of characters who will separate from the main group to begin their separate journey, distinct from the remaining groups.

The Soldiers table consists of Teor (brought to life by the voice actor), the agile character (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander (Sam), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

Given an extensive roster, it was clear from the start that having everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Overture, connecting the characters’ stories before dividing into three separate parties: Warriors, Planners, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

As described by the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who prefer a classically intense battle-oriented story mode where non-violent answers are scarce.

Initially, figures such as the reluctant priest the cleric might seem unsuited, but the developments of the third episode make it clear why these particular heroes are ideally matched for the warrior group.

Why They Must Go

For one thing, the group has a clear idea where to head next after a intense initial meeting with the antagonists.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose demise started the campaign’s events—exploited the foes for his personal gain, breaking into the hidden lair, assaulting the rogue, and swiping all the magical artifacts to auction.

The antagonist then settled his liabilities and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, north of Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each character has a personal reason to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • The agile hero, as the close ally and best friend, seeks retribution.
  • Kattigan has experience in the northern area and advises that it is a hostile place.
  • Tyranny and The healer, having resisted his relatives’ demands to execute the fighter and instead freed him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their status as prominent individuals in the influential clan could enable the party reach locations they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, Teor swore a life debt to Wicander for his deliverance and will now go with him wherever.

Fugitives

Finally, all of them are sought by the authorities that govern the city for a range of causes, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and The hero are known criminals.
  • The strong figure and The healer betrayed the influential house and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • The target is targeted for elimination by the clan.

This results in them few options but to journey toward the northern region in quest for the antagonist.

What’s Next?

Based on episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the Soldiers table will not appear the following episode, leaving the other eight cast members to round up the Seekers and Planners groups.

Audiences can anticipate finding out which characters will be where in the season’s final introductory chapter, released on the upcoming Thursday.
