The Fallout of the Nigerian Spectacular $25 Million Art Center and the Historic Artworks
Nigeria's stunning new Art Museum of West Africa (Mowaa) has ended up in the center of regional political struggles during the week it was scheduled to β but was unable β to open its doors to the public for the very first time.
The Ambitious Project
The 15-acre complex is located in the center of Benin City, capital of the southern area of Edo β and features an archaeological dig and buildings designed by renowned British-Ghanaian architect Sir David Adjaye, best known for the Washington African American Museum that began operations in the US capital in 2016.
It has been half a decade in the development β and is planned to honor both the past and the modern times of cultural innovation in the area known for the historic artworks, historical pieces stolen from the city's royal palace by British troops in the 1800s.
Setup and Prospects
It is remarkable β and ahead of the planned opening, Mowaa was active with workers resolved to demonstrate it is a place that can rival renowned museums and galleries in the West.
Inside conservators carefully unwrapped art pieces from safety materials, inspecting each item and taking detailed records before arranging them on display surfaces and plinths.
Technicians calibrated climate control systems. In the materials science laboratory, personnel set up devices meant to maintain historical objects.
Funding and Economic Goals
The project has been the concept of investor Phillip Ihenacho β presently Mowaa's chief executive.
"I hope us to have a major economic benefit on local residents in the vicinity," he stated to the press, noting that he aspired to make Benin City "a tourism center."
Mowaa, a not-for-profit Nigerian institution, envisions itself establishing in excess of 30,000 direct and indirect jobs and contributing more than $80m per year to the local cultural industry through collaborations and activities.
Funding Sources and Political Challenges
It has required $25m to achieve this stage β funds gathered from different contributors, featuring the French and German governments, the UK museum and the local administration.
But currently the state authorities has withdrawn support from under it β terminating the occupancy of the site on which the building was erected.
An government communicator stated this was because in the original paperwork it had called itself the Edo-named institution β and it had later removed "the regional name" from its name.
Protests and Political Intervention
This declaration followed rallies on Sunday, when protesters stormed the complex demanding it be designated the Royal Benin Museum.
A rowdy crowd confronted international visitors at the venue prior to the opening β forcing them to be quickly removed under police escort.
Head of state Bola Tinubu has even stepped in to work to address the dispute, establishing a high-level committee to address the controversy.
Governance Issues
But how has this evolved into so controversial β and such a PR disaster?
A great deal of it comes down to local power struggles at a regional government level, as it was Edo's previous governor Godwin Obaseki β whose administration concluded the previous year β who was a primary advocate of the initiative.
And it seems the government of the recently elected official, a strong supporter of the local traditional ruler, called the royal figure, may seek more of a stake in the venture. The demonstrators on the weekend, for case, were insisting that the museum be put under the supervision of Oba Ewuare II.
The Historical Objects Discussion
This emphasizes the disputed topic of the Benin Bronzes, one of Africa's most celebrated historical legacy.
Because although the facility does ultimately welcome visitors, these objects will be conspicuously absent.
They are brass, ivory and timber sculptures that once decorated the monarch's home of the historical empire before British soldiers looted them in the late nineteenth century during a military operation.
Currently, many stay spread across galleries in Europe and North America -- including the London museum, German museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Return Initiatives
Their repatriation has become one of the most contested debates in the global art world. About 150 have now made their way home β and more are expected to return.
When plans for the facility in the urban center were initially revealed in 2019, the key players on Nigeria's art scene expected it would become their ideal location β a advanced campus to show them off to the global audience.
But the situation became complicated two years ago after the federal government announced that the Oba would be the proper guardian of returned objects β and the monarch's court campaigned for a museum under the monarch's supervision, against the preferences of Obaseki.
Strategic Positioning
This placed Mowaa in a difficult situation: expressing a definite position on return while staying tactful on guardianship β and stressing its larger purpose, which led to|c
